ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS

(G, 90 minutes) On general release from Thursday

Absolutely adorable CGI/live-action adaptation of the singing chipmunk group in which the wise-cracking trio - Simon, Theodore and Alvin (always to be listed in that precise order) - shack up with failed musical composer David Seville (Jason Lee), who suddenly finds himself with a hit machine. Scene-stealing comedian David Cross clearly has a great time as the manipulative, money-grubbing record producer who pretends to be their friend. Perfect kids' movie. As with Stuart Little, the CG critters are surrogate sons to a childless adult who slowly realises his need for a family. And be sure to stay for the end credits to track the group's evolution since the late-1950s. -- Jim Schembri
